Naba Bhattacharjee
Convener Task Force, BCCI & President MCA

Meghalaya has a rich tradition and history of cricket for over 100 years, with Shillong being epicentre of the game since the British era, prior to independence and later as capital of undivided Assam. In fact the game spread to present Assam and other parts of the region from Shillong which has contributed with emergence of players with outstanding cricketing acumen and performance.

Meghalaya Cricket Association was revived in 2007 with the primary goal of MCA to obtain affiliation for Meghalaya with BCCI which could be achieved in 2009, gaining affiliate status. Our association since then has been in the forefront of not only broad basing the game of cricket throughout the state but also hosting numerous BCCI matches since 2010 including NCA camps for entire NE states. The defining and historic phase for the association was being granted full member status of BCCI in 2018. This was achieved after a long and arduous struggle against all odds and opposition. We have finally reached our avowed goal. However, with the permanent member eminence has come bigger challenges and responsibilities, which all of us has to meet with optimal commitment and sincerity of purpose – both individually and in unison.

The challenge lies ahead in sustaining the momentum after crossing the first milestone in the long journey ahead to harness the potential talent all over the state and simultaneously establish quality cricketing infrastructure, particularly grounds and other associated facilities. It is not an easy task, but with our joint aspiration and resolve all of us together with the present management can attain the objective of becoming a leading cricketing state of the country.

The year 2018 is marked as an important milestone in the history of cricket in the state when the Meghalaya Cricket Association was granted full membership by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).It had been an arduous journey for the MCA over the years to be able to participate in major tournaments of the country. On November 15, 2019 Meghalaya scripted a historic win over Mumbai in the Mustaq Ali T20 tournament and in the same tournament Abhay Negi of MCA scored the fastest fifty in the Mustaq Ali Trophy. In the same year, the state witnessed the defeat of Assam in the hands of the state’ s senior women’s team. Overall, it had been a good year as all categories , males and females, performed well in the BCCI tournaments.

The beginning of 2020 was marked with great uncertainty because of the Covid 19 pandemic that did put a stop to all activities including cricket.

We forsee an uphill task in coping with the ‘new normal’ and with cricket having reached the cornermost regions of the state, we stand to ‘take guard’ for a ‘brighter innings’ that awaits MCA.
