About Us

Meghalaya Cricket Association was established in the year 1997 coinciding with an appropriate juncture when popularity of cricket was growing at a phenomenal in India, particularly after the World Cup victory in 1983. However, due to various factors and lack of commitment of the management, cricket in the rural districts did not receive due impetus. In fact cricket was confined mainly in two districts ie Shillong in East Khasi Hills District and Tura in West Garo Hills District. Shillong has been the epicentre of cricket in this region since early 1900s when the British introduced the game in the hills.

Since then it has a rich legacy of cricket in the state which records shall reveal. It is from Shillong that cricket spread to other locales of this region. Shillong has been capital of Assam and many other states of the region till 1972 including HQ of Assam Cricket Association. A large number of cricketers from Shillong Cricket Association (which celebrated its PLATINUM JUBILEE – 75 YEARS in 2013) represented Assam in the Ranji Trophy over the years. In fact Shillong Cricket Association was a district of Assam Cricket Association till 2009-2010 when Meghalaya was granted affiliation by BCCI. The last player to represent Assam both in Ranji and Duleep trophy was Mr. Mark Ingty.

In the prevailing situation it was felt imperative by cricketers – both who were playing and ex-cricketers including concerned genuine cricket lovers of the state to revive Meghalaya Cricket Association and initiate activities for welfare and promotion of the game cricket in all districts besides Shillong Cricket Association – affiliated as a district with Assam Cricket Association. The dormant Meghalaya Cricket Association was reconstituted in 2007 as Cricket Association of Meghalaya to sincerely pursue and implement the aims and objectives for which the association was established and mandated to perform towards cause of cricket and its development.

The primary goal in addition to holding cricketing activities at District 7 Inter District level was to seek affiliation for Meghalaya with BCCI. In this endeavour a number of State level tournaments involving all interested Districts in different age categories, senior and women’s level, conforming to BCCI guidelines was conducted. The need of the time was to constitute a Meghalaya State Team to motivate the young cricketers who saw no future in pursuing the game. Accordingly, 1ST Invitational NE T20 Tournament was organized at Shillong from 23rd February to 29 February 2009. Assam Ranji team merged as Champion wherein state team of Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim participated. In the meantime Meghalaya was granted Affiliate membership by BCCI. In view of the heartening development Meghalaya Cricket Association was again revived and a new body constituted on June 2009, as per constitution of duly registered Meghalaya Cricket Association, under Societies Act, 1860.
