Meghalaya Cricket Association was established in the year 1997 coinciding with an appropriate juncture when popularity of cricket was growing at a phenomenal in India, particularly after the World Cup victory in 1983. However, due to various factors and lack of commitment of the management, cricket in the rural districts did not receive due impetus. In fact cricket was confined mainly in two districts ie Shillong in East Khasi Hills District and Tura in West Garo Hills District. Shillong has been the epicenter of cricket in this region since early 1900s when the British introduced the game in the hills.
Since then it has a rich legacy of cricket in the state which records shall reveal. It is from Shillong that cricket spread to other locales of this region. Shillong has been capital of Assam and many other states of the region till 1972 including HQ of Assam Cricket Association.
Meghalaya has a rich tradition and history of cricket for over 100 years, with Shillong being epicentre of the game since the British era, prior to independence and later as capital of undivided Assam.
